Leveraging Scientific Argumentation

Leveraging Scientific Argumentation was powerful because of all of the examples that the teachers shared with us that their special needs kids were able to accomplish.  I liked the way that they used other routines to scaffold students to the point of scientific argumentation.

Jim Knight's Keynote Presentation

I always enjoy hearing Jim Knight present on instruction and instructional coaching. I enjoyed the case study he shared with one of his teachers. Seeing her at home with her kids, teaching her students and interacting with him through coaching was very powerful -- as was seeing him teach the same students! I am thrilled to hear him say that the partnership approach to coaching is four times more powerful than a fidelity approach -- and that reaching the goal through the coaching cycle, with whatever adaptations prove advantageous -- is more important than fidelity. Jim Knight provided a thorough and inspiring example of collaboration and "coaching done well," one from which I will certainly benefit in my practice with SIM and with students.

I found the session, SIM Developers Tools with Patty Graner very informative.  I am really liking the organization of the new Simville site.

there are many great sessions - I'll focus on two

I learned so much through all of these sessions. I think I most appreciate Jim Knight's keynote presentation about coaching and Learning Strategies 2.0 with Amy Harvard.  Knight's presentation reminded me of why I bought his powerful coaching book.  He illustrated the significance of the coach and teacher relationship.  He demonstrated questions and respect for the teacher to serve the best interests of students.  Harvard's presentation was very practical. She shared many relevant tools and ideas for a reading program that is cost-free and devoid of "reading program fatigue."

Session: Leadership Teams: Harnessing Positive Energy to Create School Change

I appreciate Pam sharing her Responsibility Matrix. It's a great tool to make sure all members of the team know what their responsibilities are and keep everyone accountable.

·         I appreciated the discussion of the need for all 3 links in instructional delivery to be equally strong. This seems to be a sticking point typically. There also exists an over-reliance ob special ed to save the day when over 80% of most students' school day is spent in the general ed classrooms.
